Babylon

(animated sci-fi short film, Unreal Engine 4, student project, 2020/21)

Babylon is an animated short film set in a dystopic future after the surface of the earth dried out. The protagonist is chosen to ascend an ancient tower to seek a better life. But he soon realizes that the promise was built on a lie.

The project was realized within one semester at Media University Stuttgart. It was made in Unreal Engine 4 by a team of 12 students. The process was remote and very open for experimentation. I additionally did the motion capture acting with a Xsens Suit and some 3D modelling in Maya.

My responsibilities:

Writing

  • Constructing the idea and the framework of the story to fit our restrictions and capacities
  • Collaborating on the plot, voice-over, and storyboard to create an atmospheric experience that matches the team’s vision.

Sounddesign & Music

  • Creating and editing the soundscape of the film using Reaper and DaVinci Resolve
  • Digitally composing the score and doing the final mix.

Software:

  • Reaper (sound design)
  • DaVinci Resolve (sound editing and mixing)
  • Maya (3D modeling and texturing)
  • Substance Painter (texturing)
  • Unreal Engine 4 (set design, scene building)
  • Xsens MVN Link (motion capture)
  • Perforce (versioning and data management)
